Pugh Leads Enough for South Alabama Speedway
Modified Win
By Mark Chisum
The one that counted. That’s the lap Andy
Pugh led in the Modified Feature Saturday night at South Alabama
Speedway. Ricky Brooks took the lead at the drop of the green
flag and appeared headed to another Modified win. Pugh wasn’t
originally scheduled to be behind the wheel, so he had to start
in the rear due to the driver change.
It didn’t take long for Pugh to make his
way through the field, moving into second on lap nine. Brooks,
meanwhile was cruising out front. A couple of late cautions put
Pugh on Brooks’ bumper. Pugh went to work on the leader,
and he made his move on the back stretch on the final lap. Pugh
got inside of Brooks to gain the advantage. On the outside, Brooks
lost traction and spun, leaving Pugh to cross the line without
a fight. Lance Blacker finished second, followed by Jason Windham,
Teddy Sasser, and Greg Melvin.
Scotty Anderson collected his third Super Stock
feature win in a row. David Ashley led the first lap before Ryan
Redmon took control. Anderson, starting sixth, quickly moved to
second behind Redmon and closed the gap on the leader. With four
laps to go, Anderson worked his way past Redmon to take the lead.
Anderson led the remaining laps to take the win. Redmon, who had
set a new track record in qualifying, held on to second. Ashley
was third with John Shuffler fourth and Corbitt Moseley fifth.
Kip Whitehead led flag to flag to win the Vintage
Feature. Whitehead took the lead from the pole and held outran
Teddy Sasser for the win. Cody Weaver had an impressive third
place run, his best effort this season. Jamie Ater finished fourth
and Randy Henderson fifth.
The Street Stock Feature wasn’t decided
until after post race inspection. Cameron Henderson grabbed the
early lead from the pole. Henderson led until Jeff Rudd took over
the lead after a lap ten restart. Rudd led the rest of the way
to take an apparent victory. However, in post race inspection,
Rudd’s win was disqualified due to an illegal clutch. Rudd’s
“dq” handed the win to Jody Henderson. Kyle Sims moved
up to second with Chris Lucas third, Justin Tyre Tyre fourth,
and Danny Cooper fifth.
In the Roadrunner Feature, Chad Roberts took
the lead on a lap 19 restart when leader Tim Peters faded with
a deflating tire. Roberts had moved from the seventh starting
spot to put himself in position to take advantage of Peters’
misfortune. Roberts then had to hold off Billy Maxie to take the
win. Doug Powell was third followed by Marshall Flowers and Mike
Wolfe.
Max Nelson took the lead on lap eight and went
on to win the Coyote Feature. Travis Slawson led the first seven
laps before Nelson grabbed the lead after a restart. Nelson held
off brother Aaron Nelson to take the win. Michael Smith finished
third, Brent Slawson fourth, and Stephen Driggers fifth.
Pugh added a victory in the CupLites Feature,
although it wasn’t as dramatic as his Modified win. Pugh
started seventh, but eases his way through the pack, moving into
second on lap sixteen. Three laps later, he moved past race-long
leader Heath Mills and went on to capture the win. Mills followed
in second. Waylon Spivey was third with Jack Whittle fourth and
Gary Anderson fifth.
South Alabama Speedway will host Pro Late Model
drivers next week for the second Viper Series race, the Massasauga
100. Also on the night’s schedule are the local Street Stock,
Roadrunner, Coyote, and Mini Sportsman classes. For more information,
