The ASALMS Southern Division will take Five weeks off before heading down to New Smyrna Speedway

Lexington, Michigan (Tuesday, May 10, 2008): Jimmy Lang has won the first three races of the 2008 season in the ASA Late Model Series Southern Division Presented by GM Performance Parts!

Now the Bluffton, South Carolina native will have time to think about how he’s going to keep up his tremendous start to the 2008 campaign as the ASALMS South contingent will have five weekends off to regroup and refocus their efforts on the next race on the schedule.

Overall in 2008, the ASALMS Southern Division will make Three (3) appearances in the Sunshine State beginning and ending the 2008 racing season in the great state of Florida. In between the Season Opener and Season Championships is a speedway, rich in tradition, that will be waiting for a return trip by the ASALMS Southern Division!

In five weeks, the ASALMS Southern Division will head back to the famed 1/2 Mile High-Banked Paved Oval of New Smyrna Speedway, located Eight miles West of New Smyrna Beach and 15-Miles South of Daytona Beach in Samsula, Florida on Saturday, June 21, 2008 in the running of the Florida 100.

Joining the ASALMS Southern Division for the Fourth race of the 2008 season will be the tracks regular divisions of Pro Trucks, Florida Modifieds, Super Stocks, and Strictly Stocks.

The Florida 100 Entry Form will be available beginning on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 and once they’re available, they’ll be due at the ASALMS Home Offices in Lexington, Michigan by Monday, June 15, 2008!

“We’re very pleased to be returning to the home of Florida Speedweeks!” Offered ASALMS Co-Founder / President, Ron Varney. “I’m very happy with the showings of some of our ASALMS teams that went down to Speedweeks in February and did so well! Our appearance in June should be another great night of racing!” He added.

In the ASALMS Southern Divisions’ only appearance at the home of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing back on June 23, 2007 during the Florida 100 Presented by FLF Racecars, Longwood, Florida driver, Brandon Johnson, started on the outside of the front row in his unsponsored, at the time, Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

The 22-year-old withstood heavy pressure from a slew of different drivers, lastly Jeff Choquette, and would go on too win his first career ASALMS Southern Division Feature Win in just his third ever start! The eventual 2007 ASALMS Southern Division Champion and Rookie of the Year, Choquette held of Jason Boyd for a career high, at the time, second place finish.

After the event, ASALMS Officials pulled the Crate Engines from the Top Three drivers (Johnson, Choquette, and Boyd) and after all three engines were torn down, Boyd was Disqualified for Unauthorized alterations to a sealed Crate Engine and was Suspended indefinitely!

16-year-old at the time, Brian Blum inherited a career high third place finish after holding off Sean Bass, who would bring home a fourth place showing. ASALMS Northern Division invader, Jason Taghikhani, who made the haul from Hales Corners, Wisconsin made his trip worthwhile with an ASALMS career high fifth place finish.

Boyd was the original winner of the ARP Bodies Fast Qualifier Award, but as a result of his disqualification, Sean Bass inherited his first Fast Qualifier Award over the 38-car field with an 18.315. which measures out to 97.953 MPH.

Daytona Beach, Florida Teenager, 14-year-old, at the time, Chad Akins started on the pole and led all 25 laps to score his first career ASALMS win in his first ever ASALMS appearance in the GM Performance Parts Shootout.

New Smyrna Speedway is a 0.500 Mile High-Banked Paved Oval located in Samsula, Florida and races FASCAR Stock Cars every Saturday night. The speed plant was repaved in January 2007 in time for the 2007 season and the new pavement saw it’s first action during the Florida Speedweeks in February that year.

Now the fastest 0.500 Mile track in Florida, New Smyrna Speedway also has Little New Smyrna Speedway in the infield. The Mini New Smyrna races Quarter Midgets on Friday nights with Regular Racing Programs on Saturday nights.

Super Late Models highlight the weekly card on Saturdays while Late Models, Florida Modifieds, Super Stocks, Sportsmen, Pro Trucks, Strictly Stocks, and Mini Stocks will all be competing during the 2008 season.

Other traveling series’ that will visit the Sunshine State facility includes the New Smyrna-based Bright House Super Late Model Series as well as the Florida Sunbelt Series, FASCAR Goodyear Late Model Challenge Series, FAST Late Model Series, FASCAR Pro Trucks, FASTKIDS Series, TBARA Winged Sprints, Classic Auto Racing Series, the Florida Mini Stock Challenge and much more.
