Lawndale NC May 12th 2008
After an emergency meeting of the Cleveland County Rules Committee,
and further review of Friday`s action at Cleveland County Speedway
on
the 'Hot Rod`s Video', GM Performance Late Model winner Buddy
Smithwill be fined his winning purse of $800 for the use of an
ILLEGAL MIRROR.
The rules committee will allow the win to stand and Smith will
get credit for the win in the points column, however, he will
forfeit his winnings & will be put on 'illegal parts probation'
for two weeks. Another such violation can result in more severe
punishment.
"Smith gets a free pass each week as a result of his 2007
Championship, and we are powerless to suspend him for a parts
violation, so I expect him
to be there again this Friday to prove the mirror violation was
a fluke and he can still win on the big tracks. There are those
that have their doubts as the second place man was 17 years old
and gave him a real run for his (OUR) money. Plus, I find it hard
to believe that he would actually resort to the use of a mirror
to keep competitors from passing, it could have been an oversight,
so we`ll give him the benefit of the doubt, but it`s going to
cost him $800.
Furthermore, we didn`t want everybody to have to wait until Tuesday
like NASCAR, because we want the public to know that all the action
is above board here and sponsor money does not dictate our decisions.."
promoter Duane Goins said.
The action is not unprecedented as Smith has had a history of
running afoul of the rules both on & off the track ."He
is welcome to file a grievance with the board in Denver NC if
he chooses, the form is 16 pages and costs $500 to file and is
non-refundable.
I`ll be more than happy to give him the phone number, but he
better call during office hours !" Goins reported as he hung
up the phone.
Gates open at 5 PM again this week at CCS with Catawba County
residents in free.
$12 for all other adults in the grandstands with 12 & under
free,
and $20 for pit competitors in 6 classes with racing slated for
8 pm.
